Rip a DVD movie to play on a Treo 650

Here are step by step instructions to rip a DVD movie to a file that will play on your Treo 650:

1. Download and install FairUse Wizard∞on your PC. The free limited version is good enough for this purpose.
2. Download and install TCPMP to your Treo 650. I put it on my SD card and it works great.
3. Pop your DVD in your DVD drive (duh).
4. Open FairUse Wizard.
5. From top to bottom on the first form, going left to right:
6. Under Preferences, select XviD.
7. Audio track: English (or I guess you could choose another language)
8. I set the next dropdownlist to "OGG", and the rate to 32 Kb/s
9. Under Subtitles track, I just leave it blank (I think there is a "." in it)
10. The checkbox for "Use TV display mode" is checked.
11. Final file size is 200 MB (or bigboy650 suggests 1.78MB/min of the movie)
12. I leave the checkbox for "Rotate 90 degrees" blank. Suit yourself on this one.
13. Output file segments should be 1.
14. I normally leave the two checkboxes at the bottom unchecked. I guess you could have it shut down the computer when done, if you wish.
15. I clicked the "Options" button on the right and set my destination folder to "C:\Movies" to make the output file easy to find.
16. Click the "Next" button at the bottom right.
17. In the "Name" textbox, type the name of this project. I usually name it something short, like an abbreviated name for the movie. In this case, I am ripping Star Wars Episode II, so I'm naming it StarWars2.
18. Set the Folder: textbox to the path that you want for the output file, if it isn't already.
19. Click the "Next" button.
20. A dialog will pop up. If you have already inserted the DVD, just click "OK". If you have an ISO of the DVD, browse to that file using the "Browse" button, then click "OK".
21. On the next window, click on the chain that looks like it is long enough to be the entire movie. In my case it is 2:22:21 in duration.
22. I have the "Hide chains shorter than 60 seconds" checked.
23. I also have the radio button beside "Cache the selected program chains (multisession)" checked.
24. Click the "Next" button.
25. You will have to wait a little bit while the chain is indexed. For me, this step was about 40 minutes. At least it said it was going to be 40 minutes. I didn't time it.
26. On the next screen that pops up, first you can set the range of frames that you want included in your movie in the upper left. You can move the slider under the movie for a preview, so you can find the beginning of the credits, for example, if you want to end it there.
27. Under that, you can set the cropping region. I usually set the left at 150 and the right at 569, but you can suit yourself on this one. I like a "full screen" view as opposed to a "widescreen" view.
28. I generally take all of the defaults at the bottom of the screen and click the "Next" button.
29. On the next window, I click the "Auto detect" button and follow its recommendation. This time it was "IVTC mode".
30. Click the "Next" button.
31. On the next window, I set the resolution to "320 x 288". You might get some different options, but remember the T650 screen is 320 x 320.
32. Final file size: 200 MB. (or bigboy650 suggests 1.78MB/min of the movie)
33. Output File Segments: 1
34. Split at every chapter: unchecked
35. I don't change video or audio on this window.
36. The only checkbox in the "Resolution" group that I check is "Use TV display mode".
37. Click the "Next" button".
38. The next step takes a couple of hours.
39. I am going to bed now, so I am going to check the "Shutdown computer when done" checkbox.
40. Copy the file with the .ogm extension to your SD card using a card reader or some other method.
41. TCPMP will play the movie if you have the codec for .ogm files.

I am assuming that you have purchased the movie. Otherwise this would be illegal, I think, or at least immoral.
